Thanks to 21st century technology, our entire desk can follow us wherever we go. Apparently we are only limited by the demands of bodily functions, and even those seem to be negotiable.
Years of coaching Executive MBA students have given me the opportunity to live vicariously through some of the highest achievers in the country. They have taught me many important lessons that I am excited to pass on to my readers. At the top of the list is the importance of working when not at work. Working while walking the dog, working while dining out, working in bed, and even working on vacation.
I gave up long ago on attempts at coaching life balance and personal maintenance (these, along with yoga, have a bad rap in the executive suite) and decided that if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. Since then, I have diligently captured the benefits of working non-stop to share with you as the Workstation Vacation Top 10:
- You don’t have to plan your day since your day never ends.
- There is no scramble to catch up after your absence because you never really leave.
- Multi-tasking prevents you from having to focus on anything while you are focused on everything.
- Your children learn by example the value of professional priorities and commitment to one’s employer.
- Your spouse knows better than to ask for your help around the house because you’re always working.
- You can avoid time consuming conversation by texting back and forth (and back and forth).
- Your staff knows that you are available at any hour of the day or night to solve their problems for them.
- Your boss knows that you are available at any hour of the day or night to solve their problems for them.
- You don’t have to worry about being given additional work since it is obvious that it takes you 24-hours a day to do the work you already have.
- You don’t have to worry about being offered a promotion since it is obvious that it takes you 24-hours a day to do the job you already have.
So when you are ready to be unfocused, indispensible and un-promotable, just jump on board the Workstation Vacation method of management!
